iPhone OS 4.0 BETA Not Connecting to Wireless Network

iPhone OS 4.0 Beta

iOS 4 Beta Bugs:

This article is to document and discuss bugs that exist in iPhone OS 4.0 Beta.

Bug Symptoms:

When attempting to connect your iPhone to your wireless (wi-fi) network you receive the message:

“Unable to join the network {network name}” as shown below:

iphone os 4 unable to join the network

Explanation:

iPhone OS 4.0 Beta is having problems connecting to some routers when they are configured to use 802.11n or 802.11g frequency.

These frequencies typically have an operating speed of greater than 54Mbps and it is this that is causing the OS to not connect.  The solution below has been implemented and tested on iPhone OS 4.0 Beta (iOS 4) using a Netgear Wireless N Router Model WNR 2000.

Solution below…

Solution:

This solution refers to configuring a Netgear Wireless N Router (WNR 2000) but will also hopefully apply to all routers.  Please document your findings by leaving comments below so we can assist others with the same problem:

  1. Access your Netgear router configuration page
  2. On the left menu click Wireless Settings
  3. In the center pane, locate the setting Mode:
  4. Change the value in the Mode: drop down field to “Up to 54Mbps“
  5. Click Apply
  6. After the router restarts attempt to connect to your wireless network using your iPhone running iPhone OS 4.0 Beta

I have confirmed this solution with the Belkin N Wireless Router. The configuration field is Bandwidth, and the options are ’20MHz only’ or ’20MHz – 40MHz Auto’, which is the default. Selecting the 20MHz only option works.

This implies that the iPhone OS 4.0 does not yet support 40MHz 802.11n.

@carlos, I too have had troubles with the final release of os4 connecting to some networks. I cleared my network settings and it works fine afterwards.

Manish, I have tried reset my network settings and still dosen´t work.
Internet connection is only possible under EDGE.
I have ordered one Iphone 4G and it will arrive in the next days . lets see if the problem is the OS4 running the 3G iphones or if it a major “all phones” problem.
